Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has reiterated that he is unsure if he will be at Anfield next season.

The Dutch center-back has been the defensive rock behind Liverpool’s Premier League title charge this season. Despite a disappointing exit in the Champions League round of 16 to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, the club remains in pole position for two trophies this season: the Carabao Cup and the league title.

The former will be decided this Sunday against Newcastle United. In the Premier League, Liverpool is 15 points clear on top of the table and is on the precipice of securing their 20th all-time title.

Van Dijk’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season, alongside teammates Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Reports had suggested that Salah and van Dijk were the most likely to renew their contracts, with Alexander-Arnold likely heading to Spain to sign with Real Madrid.

However, the 33-year-old took time to speak with reporters after their UCL exit to say that his future is still up in the air:

I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely have no idea

It is not on hold. Nothing is on hold. I keep saying the same thing. Listen, there are ten games to go and that is my focus. If there is news, you guys will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes, but that’s about it.

At the moment, I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they know, they are lying.

There are two big prizes we can still get. We are going to give it everything. If we bring this mentality to Wembley with our fans, then I am positive. I am always positive. But I am looking forward to being back out there.

We don’t need any motivation.

After the game, van Dijk was spotted in deep conversation with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and director Luis Campos in the tunnel, fueling further speculation over his contract situation.
