QB or defender?

This is the question plaguing many NFL teams in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.

For teams like Cleveland, Tennessee, New York, and Las Vegas, landing a QB is borderline imperative. However, do you take a player at a position of need over a talent that could be considerably better?

It’s arguably the most interesting storyline ahead of the draft later this year. Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward are generally considered to be the best signal-callers available in the draft. Having said that, many draft prognosticators call it a weak QB class. Ward and Sanders likely would be drafted behind the group of QBs from last year (Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye).

The two talents jockeying for positioning as the possible No. 1 pick include athlete Travis Hunter and DE/OLB Abdul Carter.

Hunter famously followed Deion Sanders to Colorado after signing with Coach Prime out of high school at Jackson State. The No. 1 recruit in the country for his class, Hunter paved his own path and went with the unconventional route rather than landing with a traditional blueblood program. This didn’t hurt his standing as an NFL prospect in the slightest. Colorado utilized him both as a shutdown corner and as an elite receiver. Hunter ended up winning the Heisman Trophy in 2024 after comprehensively and objectively performing as the best player in College Football.

Carter accrued 12.0 sacks and 24.0 TFL this past year at Penn State. The comparisons to former Nittany Lions star Micah Parsons are undeniable. Carter’s first-step quickness is sublime, and there are people believing he can run a 4.3 40-yard time at 250 pounds. This sort of speed and transcendent athletic ability off the edge is something all teams would love.

Ward and Sanders are relatively similar as prospects. Neither possess ideal size for the position, and pure athleticism is not the strength of either player. Having said that, Ward and Sanders are tough, smart, and very accurate. Ward has played a ton of football, and Sanders has the obvious pedigree being the son of an NFL legend.

Suffice it to say, it’ll be an interesting call for these teams atop the draft order.
