Former Manchester United midfielder and current Lyon player Nemanja Matic had some harsh words for a player of his former team.

Ahead of the Europa League quarterfinal between the two teams, Man Utd goalkeeper Andre Onana claimed that his team was “way better” than Lyon. Matic wasted little time clapping back, saying that Onana is “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history.”

Matic, who made 189 appearances for United between 2017 and 2022, took the time to answer questions in his pre-match press conference. When asked for his response to Onana’s claim, Matic responded saying:

To say that, you have to have cover for something like that. Onana? You know, I respect everyone, but to say that, then you have to give the answer. If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care for what you are talking about. If David de Gea or Peter Schmeicel or van der Sar said that, then I would question myself. But if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United modern history, then he needs to show that before he says so.

Onana, 29, has been the subject of much criticism since his £43.8 million move to United from Inter Milan in 2023. He has also since responded to Matic’s remarks, taking to his X account saying: “At least I’ve lifted trophies with the best club in the world. Others can’t say the same.”

The public spat has added a layer of intrigue to the European tie, which will be Manchester United’s final opportunity to win a trophy and salvage what has been a disappointing season.

United will travel to Lyon on Thursday for the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinal. The second leg will be played in Manchester on Thursday, April 17th.
