Argentina striker Julian Alvarez had a brutally hilarious response when asked about Lionel Messi not playing against Brazil.

La Albiceleste secured a major win by defeating Brazil 4-1 at the Estadio Mas Monumental in Buenos Aires on Tuesday. They extended their lead in the quest to qualify for the World Cup, sitting on top of the CONMEBOL table by 8 points.

The Atletico Madrid striker set the tone early on by scoring in the fourth minute of the match as he collected the ball between the Brazilian central defenders as the ball bounced fortuitously in his path to slot past Brazilian goalkeeper Bento Krepski.

Eight minutes later, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez doubled their lead before Brazil back just a few minutes later. Alexis Mac Allister made it 3-1 after a beautiful Fernandez ball over the top, and Argentina completed the rout after a Giuliano Simeone goal in the 71st minute made it 4-1.

No Messi, no problem for Argentina.

After the match, Alvarez was asked about Messi’s absence from the game and gave a cheeky response:

“If Messi was on the pitch, we would have scored another two or three goals!”

He missed this international camp due to sustaining a mild adductor injury against Atlanta United in the MLS. He scored a goal and played the full 90 minutes, but was found to be unfit to travel to international duty with Argentina. He is currently training with Inter Miami during the international break, but the extent of his absence is still uncertain, with it looking increasingly unlikely that he will be fit in time for Saturday’s matchup against Philadelphia Union.
