The New England Patriots have added to their receiver room.

The team reportedly signed free agent WR Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $69 million contract with $26 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Entering the offseason, the receiver position was identified as a big need for a Patriots team heading into Year 2 with Drake Maye starting at quarterback. The 31-year-old Diggs is coming off ACL surgery but is expected to be ready for Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season.

Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowler, appeared in eight games for the Texans last year. He finished his lone year in Houston with 47 receptions for 496 yards and three TDs. 2024 broke his streak of six-straight seasons going over 1,000 receiving yards. Diggs went over 1,100 yards in all four seasons in Buffalo and led the league in yards (1,535) and receptions (127) in 2020 en route to All-Pro First-Team honors.

New England entered the offseason with the most available cap space in the league. They attempted to address the glaring need at wideout by offering Chris Godwin. Godwin turned down more money to stay in Tampa Bay on a new deal. Reports also surfaced that the Patriots attempted to trade for Tee Higgins before the big-bodied wideout signed an extension in Cincinnati. Finding more reliable targets for Maye is something the front office has prioritized. By signing Diggs, the team hopes its new wideout can help elevate the rest of the offense.

Diggs’ new deal puts him in the top-20 among all receiver contracts. However, the low guaranteed money makes it a bit more team-friendly. At $26 million over three years, Diggs is guaranteed to make the same amount as Atlanta’s Darnell Mooney. Seattle’s reported deal with Cooper Kupp (three years, $45 million) features the same amount of guarantees as Diggs. Kupp and Diggs are both entering their age-32 season, and the former Ram hasn’t played more than 12 games in a season since 2021. Last season was the first time Diggs played less than 13 games in a year.

With their new signing, the Patriots now feature a receiver room that includes Diggs, Mack Hollins, Ja’Lynn Polk, DeMario “Pop” Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, and Javon Baker. Holding the No. 4 pick in April’s draft, the team may look to add another option for Maye before the season begins.
