3 Key Offseason Moves for the Chiefs After Super Bowl Loss

The Super Bowl this past Sunday didn’t exactly go to plan for the Kansas Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes and company were thoroughly dominated en route to a 40-22 blowout loss. The Chiefs’ offensive line was a major worry heading into the game — and that proved to be a reality. Mahomes had little time to throw the ball. The ferocious Philadelphia defensive front lived in the backfield for the duration of the contest.

To put it into perspective, Mahomes was sacked a whopping six times. In truth, it probably could’ve been even worse had it not been for his elusiveness evading Eagles’ pass rushers.

In short, KC does need to make some tweaks in order to get back to yet another Super Bowl. Here’s a few ways Andy Reid’s team can accomplish just that:

1. Re-Sign Trey Smith

Smith did not have a great Super Bowl performance (then again, who did?) over the weekend. Having said that, he’s still an elite interior lineman in this league.

Protecting Mahomes at all costs is what this franchise has to do in order to stay elite. There will be some fierce competition for his services — likely from the Bears and 49ers. Kansas City has to free up enough money to keep Smith in the fold. Further weakening a group which needs retooling could set the team back.

2. Add Further Skill Talent

This might sound funny on the surface. Kansas City’s offense with Mahomes under center has the reputation as being an explosive entity. This wasn’t the case in 2024. There were times where the Chiefs stuggled to move the football. For as great as Travis Kelce used to be, he’s a shell of the player he once was. Glacially slow, the Chiefs could use an upgrade at the spot whether or not he opts to return.

It does appear as if KC did hit on Xavier Worthy. He’s more of a deep threat — albeit an elite one — rather than someone who will constantly move the chains in 3rd Down situations. DeAndre Hopkins and Juju Smith-Schuster are both over the hill at this point. Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco both rushed for less than four yards a carry. Recent/former first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire is already off the roster.

With four picks in the first three rounds, the Chiefs have a chance to upgrade its offense by giving Mahomes more help across the board.

3. Address Free Agency Efficiently

Understandably, a ton of money is tied up in Mahomes and Chris Jones. As mentioned above, re-signing Smith is virtually imperative.

A handful of noteworthy contributors will be free agents this offseason. Chief among them include Smith, Hopkins, Smith-Schuster, Hunt, DL Charles Omenihu, WR Hollywood Brown, DL Derrick Nnadi, OT DJ Humphries, LB Nick Bolton, and DB Justin Reid.

It will be fascinating to see how the Chiefs opt to fill out their roster considering the impending free agents along with possible trades.
