The coaching carousel has continued to move at a very high rate this offseason.

In correspondence with the transfer portal and the ever-changing notion of NIL money, we’ve seen a host of top-shelf coaches move to other jobs. Kevin Willard left Maryland after a very successful year in order to take the job at Villanova. Some believe Villanova was more of a successful job considering a greater chunk of NIL money will go towards the basketball program there rather than being essentially shared with the football program.

However, what one man left another man views as a great opportunity.

According to The Field of 68, Buzz Williams has left the Texas A&M gig in order to take over for Willard at Maryland. It’s a curious move for both parties — especially Williams when dissecting his tenure in College Station.

Texas A&M had been a borderline top-10 team all year long. Williams did a masterful job mixing together portal recruiting along with kids from the high school ranks to create one of the better teams in the SEC. Unfortunately for the Aggies, they were clipped in the Round of 32 by a good Michigan squad.

In College Station, Williams took over at a school known for football. Even then, he led the Aggies to four-straight seasons with at least 20 wins. This included NCAA Tournament appearances in each of the last three years. Prior to that, Williams took Virginia Tech and Marquette to a combined eight NCAA Tournament appearances — including three Sweet 16 spots and one Elite 8 run with Marquette.

Maryland pivoted quickly after Willard was not so subtle in denying interest from Villanova even when coaching the Terrapins in the tournament. Now, Maryland can move on and help Williams rebuild a roster which figures to lose the entire core from this year’s squad.
