One notable name who’s thrown his hat into the proverbial ring is New Mexico guard Donovan Dent.
The reigning Mountain West Player of the Year has been a fantastic talent for the Lobos. A former 4-star prospect out of Southern California, Dent averaged 20.4 PPG and 6.4 APG this past year. He’s a quick, athletic guard with a slashing mentality. Dent loves taking players off the dribble, and he’s excellent in sharing the rock with teammates.
Being a West Coast native, UCLA may have a real chance here. Dent played with some of the current/past Bruins, and grew up not too from the campus in Westwood. The Bruins need a reset at guard, and Dent would walk into a starting spot with much of the roster figuring to return next year. A team featuring Dent, Tyler Bilodeau, Skyy Clark, Eric Dailey, and Aday Mara would surely be a favorite to win the Big Ten next year — if not the National Title.
Also helping the Bruins is the fact Dent has played for Richard Pitino. Pitino and his father are very close to UCLA head coach Mick Cronin. Cronin coached under Rick Pitino for years, and has made no secret the bond in which the two families have. If Dent doesn’t follow the younger Pitino to his presumed next job, there’s a scenario where Dent can come back home and play for a coach his preexisting coach has a great relationship with.
