Caitlin Clark Named WNBA Rookie of the Year After Record-Breaking Season

Caitlin Clark’s selection as the WNBA Rookie of the Year for 2024 was hardly a surprise, but it still came with a minor twist. While many expected a unanimous decision, Clark received 66 out of 67 votes, with the remaining vote going to Angel Reese.

Throughout the season, Clark more than lived up to the high expectations that followed her into the league. Although the Indiana Fever were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs after securing the 6th seed, Clark’s performance was nothing short of historic. She led the league in assists and posted impressive averages of 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game. For a team that had finished 10th the previous season, her impact was clear, helping the Fever reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Even in a season cut short for Reese due to injury, she managed to leave a mark, leading the league in rebounding with a staggering 13.1 boards per game. Unfortunately, Reese’s season-ending injury meant she missed the final stretch of the regular season, but her influence was felt throughout the year.

Clark’s achievements were groundbreaking on multiple fronts. She set new records for the highest scoring average by a rookie and both single-season and single-game assists. Her scoring ranked seventh across the league, and more importantly, her presence revitalized the Fever franchise and brought new excitement to the WNBA. From sold-out home games to increased viewership on television, Clark’s electrifying style of play made the league must-watch entertainment from the opening tip-off.

Clark expressed her gratitude following the announcement, saying, “I am incredibly honored to be named Rookie of the Year. More than that, I am grateful to everyone who supported me throughout this past season — my family and friends, my teammates, the Fever organization, and everyone who cheered us on all season. I am so proud of what we accomplished and so excited for what the future holds.”

As for Reese, the one vote she received for Rookie of the Year highlights the impression she made in her debut season. She embraced her role as a physical and competitive presence on the court, which made her a key figure for her team and a player to watch in the future.

While Clark deservedly took home the top honor, both she and Reese have laid the groundwork for what could be thrilling careers, signaling a bright future for the next generation of WNBA stars.
