The ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’ series is a cultural milestone for both gamers and skateboarding fans alike.

When the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 remake was announced, fans were left scratching their heads as to why iconic skater Bam Margera was apparently excluded. The reality TV legend was a staple in the original games.

He first appeared as himself in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 (2001) as a selectable character. At the time, he was riding the wave of popularity from MTV’s Jackas* and his own spinoff, Viva La Bam. He would return again as himself in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 (2002), with a hilarious move set that was inspired by his Jackas* stunts, like the “Shopping Cart Grind” or “Rocket Launcher Ollie”.

According to the Nine Club podcast, Tony Hawk himself had called up developers Activision to include Margera. After he was told ‘no,’ he insisted on flying Margera out to the studios to get a body scan for the game.

Margera has long-documented struggles with substance abuse, which led to his ousting from the Jackas* group. Things were made even worse following the death of his childhood friend and Jackas* co-star, Ryan Dunn. After Tony had skated with Bam at the beginning of March and noted how well he looked, he personally fought for his inclusion in the game.

The game comes after the success of the THPS 1+2 remake, and many fans might be excited at the potential of even further remakes, such as Tony Hawk’s Underground (THUG).

With THPS 3+4 slated for a July 11th release, it will feature the full original roster in addition to a few new names. The roster includes: Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, Steve Caballero, Kareem Campbell, Geoff Rowley, Andrew Reynolds, Elissa Steamer, Chad Muska, Eric Koston, Rodney Mullen, Jamie Thomas, Rune Glifberg, Bob Burnquist, Rayssa Leal, Chloe Covell, Jamie Foy, Zion Wright, and Yuto Horigome.
