Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has ended months of speculation over his future by confirming that he has signed a two-year contract extension with the club, committing until 2027.

The club officially announced the deal on Thursday, and it marks a major moment for them as they have now confirmed the extension of their two best players Mohamed Salah and van Dijk, with the former also confirming a two-year extension earlier this week. It will also help with future signings this summer, as the club’s Premier League-winning spine remains intact for at least another two years.

Since joining Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for a then-record 75 million GBP fee, van Dijk has become known as one of the best defenders to have ever played the game. He has won every trophy available at the club level, including the Premier League, Champions League, two League Cups, FA Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. He is also about to confirm his second-ever Premier League trophy, needing just two more wins in the 2024/25 season with six games left to play.

The signing squashes rumors of a move to Saudi Arabia or other European giants such as Real Madrid or PSG. The Dutch captain reiterated his love for Liverpool after his signing, saying, “It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan,” he said.

According to ESPN, negotiations between the player and the club had been ongoing for months, and his leadership and consistent performances under new manager Arne Slot impressed him. His partnership with fellow center-back Ibrahima Konate has seen them concede the second-fewest goals in the Premier League this season at 31, and Slot will undoubtedly want to keep that solidity in place.
