Trent Alexander-Arnold has confirmed he is leaving Liverpool.

The heavily rumored move to Spanish giants Real Madrid is now likely to materialize as expected. The Liverpool-born-and-raised right back will look to join them on a free transfer after announcing he is departing the club when his contract expires at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season.

Alexander-Arnold took to social media to announce the move personally. The 26-year-old shared a video explaining his decision to seek “new challenges” abroad, and while Real Madrid isn’t explicitly mentioned — it is implied. The announcement was made one week after Liverpool officially clinched the Premier League title, following the 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Since joining Liverpool’s academy at six, he has transformed into one of the best right-backs in the sport. His emergence and debut were handed to him under former manager Jurgen Klopp, who left the club last season. He made 315 senior appearances, scoring 19 goals and 81 assists, becoming known as one of the rare few defenders to also be a potent attacking force up the pitch.

In his official statement video, Trent said leaving was “heartbreaking,” saying, “This club, these fans, this city — they’re everything to me.” Yet, he expressed a desire to “test myself at the highest level” elsewhere, and vowing to eventually return as a supporter.

The decision to depart the club, which was quietly known for some months now, has led to fan uncertainty and mixed reactions. A few spattering of boo’s could be heard when Alexander-Arnold was substituted on in a recent game, although his game-winning goal against Leicester City had many celebrating him and his legacy. Pundits like Gary Neville praised Trent as a “generational talent,” and urged fans to respect his choice.

For Liverpool, they now face the daunting task of having to replace the right-back. Backup Conor Bradley is a good player, but it is unknown if he his title-winning quality, yet. Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, and Andrew Robertson have all been rumored to depart the club or get upgraded in the summer. Center-backs Jarrel Quansah and Joe Gomez have fitness issues, and they may need to sign even more defensive reinforcements. Safe to say, owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) will have to open their wallets this summer.
