Look away, Liverpool fans.
Trent Alexander-Arnold looks to be leaving his boyhood club at the end of the season, according to Sky Sports Switzerland.
In a deal that has seemingly been in the works for a few years now, Alexander-Arnold is set to agree to a free deal with Spanish giants Real Madrid. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the player has been talking with Real Madrid and is now waiting for the Spanish club to inform Liverpool of the agreement. The boyhood scouser signed a four-year contract extension with the club in 2021 but will let it expire at the end of the 2024-25 season.
The contract mess doesn’t end there for Liverpool. Star players Mohammed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk also have contracts expiring at the end of 2025 with no agreement in sight. Center-back Ibrahima Konate has a contract that is set to expire in 2026, meaning Liverpool will have to outlay a large amount of money just to re-sign their current spine.
Safe to say, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group will have to open their wallets in the offseason. They have received fan criticism for their lack of spending in recent years. Last summer, they only signed two players: Federico Chiesa and Giorgio Mamardashvili, with the latter not joining until the summer of 2025 and the former seeing limited game time. Liverpool’s squad has remained stagnant and the owners have failed to reinforce the roster, despite senior players who have come out to the press to insist the owners show more ambition in the transfer market.
Many positions are questionable heading into the 2026 season. Senior left-back Andrew Robertson has begun to show his age in a high-intensity pressing system. Strikers Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Diogo Jota have each been linked with moves away, and have only scored a combined 19 Premier League goals this year. Alexander-Arnold leaving means they will need another right-back, as Connor Bradley is injury-prone and isn’t Premier League-winning quality, yet.
Despite the disappointment of being knocked out of the FA Cup, Champions League, and League Cup, Liverpool is on the precipice of winning its 20th all-time Premier League title. It’s incredible Arne Slot managed it in his first season, but rivals Arsenal and Manchester City were ravaged by injuries.
Amid new signings and an adjusted playing style, it will be interesting to see what the ownership with do in the offseason. With a 20th Premier League trophy, it would be the perfect high note for players like van Dijk, Salah, and Alexander-Arnold to leave on a high note. The feeling within the club is that there will be less business to conduct in the summer if van Dijk and Salah are re-signed, meaning they may focus their attention on extending those two, according to The Athletic.
Liverpool’s quest to claim the Premier League title resumes on April 2 when it plays Everton at home. The title will be mathematically confirmed if The Reds win five of the remaining nine Premier League games.
