Mohamed Salah has still not signed a new contract with his club Liverpool. The Egyptian signed for the club in 2017 and is in the last year of his current deal, which is set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season.
The player has been heavily rumored to leave Liverpool for the Saudi Arabian Pro League in recent seasons, although a move away would certainly signal the end of his competitive career. While it appears that Salah is keen to stay at Liverpool, there has been little public effort by the club to retain their star.
After last month’s 1-0 win over Southampton, Salah told journalist James Pearce after the match regarding his contract: “Right now, I’m more out than in!”
Last weekend, Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur 6-3 in a chaotic contest that saw Salah record two goals and two assists in a Man of the Match performance. He has now broken yet another record: he is the first player in Premier League history to record double-digit goals and assist tallies before Christmas.
After the match, Salah provided yet another contract update with a simple two words:
“No update.”
Should Liverpool give Salah the money he’s asking for?
The 32-year-old is currently in the form of his life as we head into the second half of the Premier League season. Liverpool are currently in 1st in both the Premier League and Champions League tables.
Physically, he is still in fantastic shape. Modern football and sports science have allowed players to have even longer careers — look no further than the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo who is still playing at a high level today. When he returned to the Premier League in 2021 with Manchester United, he was 37 years old. He recorded approximately 1 goal in every two matches — a record most Premier League strikers would be delighted over.
If Liverpool is serious, they should be moving heaven and earth to ensure Salah remains at the club. The player loves Liverpool and the Premier League, and he is now entering all-time conversations as the greatest winger in league history.
Salah is now the eighth-highest goalscorer in Premier League history with 172 goals. He needs only three more to eclipse Thierry Henry and fifteen more to take the 4th spot. Wayne Rooney is in 3rd with 208, Harry Kane is 2nd with 213, and Alan Shearer has the top spot with 260 goals.
There is little doubt that Salah wants to imprint his name in the legacy of the Premier League — and it is for this reason we can easily see him staying at Liverpool despite the contract drama. He will undoubtedly be driven by the fact his name is on the precipice of legendary status if it hasn’t already.
Contract negotiations are further complicated by the fact that fellow stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are also in the last year of their current deals. Liverpool will have to outlay a major sum of cash to retain all three. So far, none of them have committed to new contracts. Liverpool have six months to make it right.
