According to English outlet The Daily Star, ex-Manchester United and England winger Mason Greenwood has filed the paperwork to switch his international allegiance from England to Jamaica.
Currently playing for French side Marseille, the forward is looking to officially close his chapter playing for England after the football association informed him that he would no longer be considered for selection. The decision came after the player was charged with sexual assault three years ago.
While the player is adamant about no wrongdoing and despite the charges being dropped, the player is still outcasted from England. In the meantime, Greenwood has attempted to revive his career at club teams in Spain and France. The player officially transferred to Marseille from Manchester United in the summer of last year, after spending a season on loan at Getafe in Spain.
He currently leads the scoring chart in France with 12 goals in 18 appearances.
With his English international career effectively over, the player has now turned to Jamaica. He has officially submitted the paperwork to complete the national team switch. He is eligible to play for the Reggae Boyz due to his father being born in the Caribbean nation. As per FIFA rules, the fact he only appeared for the English national team while he was under the age of 21 allows him to switch allegiances.
Jamaica, managed by former England coach Steve McClaren, will add him to a squad that already features several English-Jamaican players such as Michail Antonio and Mason Holgate.
The next games Jamaica plays are friendlies against Trinidad and Tobago in a few weeks. However, it appears unlikely that Marseille will sanction the player to leave, meaning that he would most likely make his Jamaica debut in June this year.
