Luis Suarez is staying at Inter Miami.
The MLS club officially announced on Wednesday that the Uruguayan striker has extended his deal with the club. The 37-year-old forward, who joined Inter Miami in December 2023, was an integral part of the record-breaking regular season they experienced, recording 74 points. However, their season ended prematurely after they shockingly exited in the first-round of the playoffs following defeat at the hands of Atlanta United.
Suarez’s debut season in the MLS was a successful one, netting 20 goals in 27 matches alongside former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. The reunion of the Barcelona players was a major factor in the striker joining the MLS side.
Raul Sanllehi, President of Football Operations and Inter Miami, stated “Luis was not only our leading scorer this season but also a leader of the group. His impact cannot be understated.”
Suarez’s extension comes after his retirement from the Uruguayan national team, where he finished his international career being the all-time leading scorer for his country with 69 goals in 143 appearances.
While he was a notable player for both Ajax and Liverpool, Suarez started winning an incredible amount of trophies when he transferred to Barcelona, winning the Spanish La Liga five times, the Copa del Rey four times, and the UEFA Champions League once. While playing for Atletico Madrid, he added yet another La Liga title to his name.
Looking ahead to 2025, Inter Miami CF will be joined by yet another former Barcelona player in Javier Mascherano, except the Argentine will be coaching the team, replacing Tata Martino who resigned after crashing out in the first round of the playoffs last season.
He will be expected to play a crucial role yet again, as the club aims for its first-ever MLS Cup trophy.
