Liverpool Rejects Al Nassr’s Approach for Darwin Nunez

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is now the subject of interest from Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

However, Liverpool apparently have ‘no intention’ of selling the Uruguayan striker this January as the Reds continue their Premier League and Champions League campaign this season, sitting on top of both respective tables while also in the Carabao Cup semifinals.

Nunez has struggled to nail down a starting spot this season, recording 10 g/a in 29 appearances in all competitions, a considerable drop-off from 31 g/a last season when Jurgen Klopp was manager. New Liverpool manager Arne Slot seemingly prefers Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz in the #9 role, leading to substantially reduced game time for Nunez.

If Liverpool decides to move on from Nunez, Ornstein states that there will be ‘significant interest’ this summer. In the meantime, Al Nassr will attempt to secure the services of either Victor Boniface or Jhon Duran this month after striker Anderson Talisca left to join Fenerbahce.

Nunez could be marked to start for Liverpool today at PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League, as Slot has left most of his main starters, such as Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister back at Merseyside. The match is essentially viewed as a “dead rubber,” with the result making little to no difference in their seeding to knockout stages.

In the meantime, Liverpool looks set to let another transfer window pass by without making any incoming transfers. Perhaps for good reason, as it’s difficult to argue with the results so far: 1st in the Premier League and the Champions League. It is now the fourth transfer window in a row that they have not made a major signing, with Federico Chiesa being relatively cheap at 12 million Euros, and 30 million signing Giorgi Mamardashvili not joining until this summer. Should Liverpool decide to ship Nunez on, they would do well to recoup the 65 million base fee they paid for him to reinvest back into the squad.
