The process has begun to extend the Egyptian King’s reign at Anfield.
Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool contract is set to expire at the end of this season, and he has made it extremely clear in recent weeks where he stands. “Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers to stay at the club,” he said to the media after Liverpool’s match against Southampton a few weeks ago. “I’m probably more out than in.”
Now, it appears the situation has changed. According to sources at The Athletic, Liverpool has now made ‘an opening offer’ to renew Salah’s contract. While there is no indication that it will be accepted, the ball is now in Salah’s proverbial court.
To make matters slightly more complicated, teammates and fellow world-class players Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contracts also expire at the end of this season. Sources have suggested that these two players have also received proposals to extend their contracts, which would also demand high wages.
The 32-year-old forward signed for Liverpool in 2017, and since then he’s established himself as one of the greatest players to ever play in the Premier League. Salah perfectly fit then-manager Jurgen Klopp’s ‘heavy metal’ style of play, scoring an incredible 44 goals in all competitions in his debut season. In 2019, he scored a penalty in the UEFA Champions League final win over Tottenham Hotspur and became a Premier League champion the season after.
He has continued his fine form so far this season, scoring 15 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, with his latest contribution being a goal and an assist against Newcastle United in their 3-3 draw. He currently leads the Premier League in goals scored, tied with Halaand at 13 who has played one more game.
Liverpool and Salah’s next game is in the UEFA Champions League, away to Spanish side Girona on Tuesday.
