Liverpool FC is back on its perch.

They beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield last weekend, mathematically clinching the Premier League title and the club’s 20th all-time title. The party atmosphere was well on display before kickoff even began, as the crowd gathered outside the stadium to welcome the team bus with flares and songs.

Needing either a win or draw to clinch the title, Liverpool simply needed to avoid losing. As coach Arne Slot put it in his post-match celebrations, he said “There was no way we were losing today.”

Tottenham star Dominic Solanke did his best to give an early scare against his former team, as he headed in a goal unmarked from a corner and put Tottenham up 1-0 after just 12 minutes. But from there, it was all Liverpool. Luis Diaz equalized just four minutes later after the goal was initially ruled offside. Alexis Mac Allister made it 2-1 10 minutes later from a scorching left-foot shot just outside the box. Cody Gakpo scored to make it 3-1 after a scramble in the box following a corner kick, and Mohamed Salah made it 4-1 in the second half. Spurs player Destiny Udogie scored an own-goal in the 69th minute, making it 5-1 and completing the rout.

Upon the final whistle, Anfield erupted in flares and songs, such as Dua Lipa’s “One Kiss” — a song that has become a custom for the fans to sing immediately after winning a trophy. It also marked the first time the club was able to celebrate a league title physically with their supporters, as their last title win came during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Outside of new signing Federico Chiesa — who himself has played very limited minutes this season — the squad is comprised of players solely signed and coached by former manager Jurgen Klopp. While the German wasn’t in attendance at Anfield, he broke his silence on his Instagram account, saying:

Super grateful for the past, super super happy about the present, extremely positive about the future! Congratulations – YNWA

The official trophy lift will occur at the final weekend of the Premier League season, meaning Liverpool will have to wait another month before getting their hands on the coveted prize. The city parade is scheduled for May 26th.
