Lionel Messi’s bodyguard Yassine Cheuko has been sidelined by the MLS.

Ever since Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023, the former Navy SEAL has become a bit of a viral sensation on social media, being known for sprinting across the field to stop pitch invaders (often just children) attempting to embrace Messi.

However, in light of the MLS deciding to take full control of security measures, it means he is no longer allowed to act as Messi’s private security during matches.

“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore,” Cheuko told Spanish media. He also contrasted the MLS with his seven-year stint in Europe, where he worked security for Ligue 1 and the Champions League. In Europe, he saw only 6 pitch invaders, compared to his 20 months in the U.S., where 16 fans have breached security to approach Messi. “There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi,” he said.
Messi’s stardom has certainly brought an interesting security dynamic to matches, and the league is still adapting to his status. Having the greatest and most popular player of all-time playing in new stadiums every week has presented a unique challenge to protecting him, as Cheuko notes: “I love MLS and CONCACAF, but we have to work together. I love helping. I’m not better than anyone, but I have a wealth of experience in Europe. I understand their decision, but I think we could do better.”
Pitch invasions have become a recurring spectacle at Inter Miami games, with fans desperate for a moment with the Argentine legend. Cheuko was personally recommended by Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham, and brought a European-honed expertise to the role. Yet, MLS appears intent on standardizing security.
Despite the ban, the 37-year-old insists that he remains a key figure in Messi’s off-field security team, “I’ll continue to work on Messi’s personal security team outside of the stadiums,” he said.
