Liverpool’s towering center-back Ibrahima Konate isn’t the only Liverpool player seeking a contract extension.

Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk all have contracts running down this summer, and it remains to be seen if they will extend their stays at the club.

But Konate, whose contract runs out in 2026, is also seeking an extension. According to British outlet The Times, the Frenchman is seeking around £200,000 per week, a 150% increase from his current wage. Liverpool will have to weigh whether or not they will have the funds to sanction such an extension, otherwise they will risk another contract saga similar to his three teammates.

The Parisian has previously been linked to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. Still only 25 years old, he has the potential to be one of the best defenders in the game.

The sticking point, however, is Konaté’s injury history and perceived inconsistency. £200,000 a week is a gamble for a player who hasn’t yet matched the reliability of Van Dijk. Supporters will point to his youth and physical dominance, though it remains to be seen if Liverpool will have to add to their defensive ranks — especially with van Dijk’s future uncertain beyond 2025.

If both were to stay, it would help solidify the Liverpool defensive wall for years to come.

In his debut season (2021-22), he missed 13 matches due to various knocks, including ankle and knee problems limiting him to 29 appearances across all competitions. The following year, a muscle injury sidelined him for two months early in the campaign, and additional minor setbacks meant he started just 18 Premier League games.

In 2023-24, while he showed improvement with 34 appearances, a hip injury and a thigh issue still caused him to miss key fixtures including a stretch in November. This season under new manager Arne Slot, he has started strong — but has had a few lingering issues requiring him to be substituted early.

£200,000 a week is a benchmark for top-tier Premier League talent. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland reportedly earns over £375,000 weekly, while Kevin De Bruyne sits around £400,000. At Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes earns approximately £240,000 per week. Konate currently sits at £80,000, and his push for a higher wage indicates his progress as a player since he joined the club in 2022.

Since joining the club, he has won the FA Cup, the EFL Cup twice, and is on the precipice of winning the Premier League.

In his debut season, Liverpool finished as runners-up in the UEFA Champions League final (losing to Real Madrid).
