UEFA, the European governing body of football, has today announced that four Real Madrid players are under investigation for what is being called “indecent conduct” following their Champions League Round of 16 victory over Atletico Madrid on March 12th.

The players include Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., Antonio Rudiger, and Dani Ceballos.

The antics in question allegedly occurred after the match, when the Los Blancos players were celebrating in front of the Atletico fans following their penalty shootout win over their cross-town rivals at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Video clips showed the players making obscene gestures, including grabbing crotches and throat-slitting gestures. UEFA said that they have appointed an ethics and disciplinary investigator to look further into the allegations. Atletico brought forward the complaint, arguing that the actions caused tensions to escalate in the stadium and violated fair play principles.

Any ban imposed on the players would mean that they would miss the quarterfinals against Arsenal, with the first game being played on April 8th.

There is precedence for punishments following obscene gestures. Last year, Jude Bellingham scored a last-gasp goal for England against Slovakia in the European Championship and celebrated by grabbing his crotch. UEFA found Bellingham to be guilty of violating “basic rules and conduct” and was given a one-match ban and a fine.

According to the rules of the game, players who exhibit “offensive, insulting, or abusive languages or actions” or “acting in a provocative or inflammatory way” will be subjected to red cards.

In UEFA’s released statement, they said: “Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”
