Barcelona Stun Real Madrid 5-2 to Win Spanish Supercopa

Who expected that?

Barcelona emphatically defeated Real Madrid 5-2 to claim their 15th all-time Spanish Supercopa title Sunday night. Real Madrid’s Galacticos Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., and Jude Bellingham weren’t enough to defeat Barca — who fully deserved their victory. This was despite Barca goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny receiving a red card in the 56th minute after he fouled Mbappe outside of the box.

However, the game was practically over by halftime when Barca went into the break with a 4-1 lead over their arch-rivals Los Blancos. The half-time break was a welcome pause for Real Madrid, as it felt Barcelona could have easily scored another three.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has them figured out. They also handily defeated Real Madrid 4-0 in La Liga last October, meaning they have now scored nine goals in two matches against them. He also got revenge on them as Real Madrid defeated Barca 4-1 in the same final last year. This victory marks his first trophy at the club.

While the Spanish Supercopa is not as illustrious as the La Liga or Copa del Rey trophies, any match where Barcelona plays Real Madrid, especially in a cup final, will be as intense as ever.

Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and young sensation Lamine Yamal spearheaded the potent attack, while their defense effectively kept superstars Vini Jr. and Rodrygo quiet.

It was an embarrassing defeat for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Are cracks beginning to form in the ‘Galacticos’ model? Probably not. Real Madrid will likely finance their next ‘shiny new toys’ and buy their way out of the problem — likely in the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is heavily rumored to sign for them as a free agent this summer.

Real Madrid is only one point off leaders Atletico Madrid in the La Liga standings.
