Arne Slot Breaks ‘Almost Impossible’ 132-Year Record with Liverpool

On Wednesday night, Liverpool secured a 1-0 victory over RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena in Germany, thanks to a first-half goal from Darwin Nunez. The win moved Liverpool up to second place in the UEFA Champions League table, tied on points with leaders Aston Villa but trailing by a one-point goal differential (Aston Villa +6, Liverpool +5). The team maintains a perfect record in the Champions League, having won all three of their group matches so far.

This victory also marked a significant milestone for manager Arne Slot, who has now led Liverpool to 11 wins in 12 matches across all competitions, including winning the first six away games. Remarkably, this is the first time in the club’s 132-year history that a new manager has achieved such a start. Reflecting on the achievement in his post-match press conference, Slot acknowledged the significance but emphasized that trophies, not records, are his ultimate goal.

“I think I said before that we should be proud because so many great teams have worn this shirt, many great players have been at this club,” Slot said. “To achieve something that was not achieved before is almost impossible at a big club like this. To achieve it is always nice but as I said about other records, records are nice but other things are nicer than records and you know what I mean by that — trophies.”

Liverpool’s win over RB Leipzig came through a controlled, disciplined performance, showcasing a defensive solidity that might not be expected from the team, especially given Jurgen Klopp’s previous “heavy metal” attacking approach. It was a similar story the weekend before against Chelsea, where Liverpool emerged 2-1 winners after successfully neutralizing Chelsea’s attack.

“The way I looked at this game, for me we had a large part of the game in total dominance, as we did in all the games except for Chelsea,” said Slot. “I’m not worried at all about this game. I was a bit more worried after the Chelsea game, but this is what I like to see — the team plays with much more possession, freeing up the midfield.”

Liverpool’s attempt to extend this impressive run will be tested by a challenging upcoming fixture list. They face Arsenal at the Emirates this weekend, followed by matches against Brighton (twice), Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Southampton, Real Madrid, and Manchester City.

“It is a tough fixture list,” Slot admitted. “We have some injuries now, so I have to take care of the players. Sunday is a big game coming up, and I need to use as many players as I can for these tough months.”
