In an announcement that seemingly came from left field, French football star Antoine Griezmann has announced that he has officially retired from the French National Team.
The 33-year-old, who currently plays for Spanish La Liga side Atlético de Madrid, took to his Instagram profile on Monday to announce his decision to retire from international football.
“After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes, and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation,” Griezmann said in his social media video.
“It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent tricolour adventure and see you soon.
“Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege.”
The decision comes shortly before the next planned international break, where France is set to play Israel and Belgium on October 10th and 14th, respectively.
Griezmann was born in Macon, France where he started playing football professionally at age 14. Although he was initially rejected for his small stature, he persisted and signed for Spanish side Real Sociedad. In 2009, he made his professional debut and was a vital part of winning promotion to La Liga for Real Sociedad. Thanks to these performances, many big clubs started eyeing the young Frenchman including Atlético Madrid, where he would play from 2014-2019.
In 2018, he played a major role in propelling France to a World Cup victory in Russia, being named Man of the Match in the final vs. Croatia. In 2021, France won the UEFA Nations League trophy, where he played in matches with key performances leading up to the Final, where they bested Spain 2-1.
In all, Griezmann had 122 caps for France and 44 goals, making him one of the best French players of his generation.
