Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has been the subject of transfer rumors all year. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, fans have been waiting for news of his potential extension. With the season running down, the more that his heavily rumored free transfer to Real Madrid looks likely to materialize. If this move were to emerge, Liverpool would have the daunting task of replacing the boyhood scouser, who has won every single trophy available at the club. While backup right-back Conor Bradley would be a decent replacement, there are still question marks over whether he is trophy-winning quality. Here are three replacements Liverpool could potentially sign to replace the right-back:
Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer Leverkusen)
The 24-year-old Netherlands international would certainly fit the already-established Dutch culture at Liverpool. Manager Arne Slot and players Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Virgil van Dijk would go a long way to make their compatriot feel welcome. On the pitch, he offers the vision and attacking output that could excel under Slot’s system. In the 2023/24 Bundesliga season, he scored 9 goals and 7 assists in 31 appearances, and his heat map shows a forward-thinking defensive role. He ranked in the 99th percentile for non-penalty expected goals (xG) plus expected assists (xA) per game amongst European-based fullbacks. He also has the pace and defensive work rate that stretches opposing teams, which would complement players like Mohamed Salah, who often prefers to cut inside.
Pedro Porro (Tottenham Hotspur)
With Tottenham looking likely to finish a dismal 15th this season, Porro could have his head turned by a move to champions Liverpool this offseason. Porro is a more stylistic cousin to Alexander-Arnold and excels in ball progression and creativity. This season, he has created 44 chances from open play, second only to (you guessed it), Alexander-Arnold at 55. His 109 open-play crosses and inverted movements into midfield are a mirror of Alexander-Arnold, and would offer Liverpool more continuity in their build-up play. He’s also defensively active, with his tackle success rate sitting at 69%. While his price tag is rumored to be on the higher end, his proven Premier League experience would make him a solid plug-and-play replacement.
Tino Livramento (Newcastle United)
Speaking of proven Premier League experience, Liverpool may also prefer to look at Tino Livramento at Newcastle. Still only 22 years old, he would provide a long-term investment in addition to immediate impact. But, he would offer a different type of role over Alexander-Arnold. His 2024/25 campaign includes 1 goal and 2 assists in 25 Premier League games, but it’s his defensive ability that would interest the Reds — winning 68% of ground duels, per FBref. His versatility to play both on the right and left would offer more dynamism, and his 2.1 progressive carries per 90 aligns with Liverpool’s need for more positive ball progression. His standout performance against Salah in the 2025 Carabao Cup final showcased his effective 1-on-1 defending and gave the Reds a front-row seat at the potential of his ability. While Newcastle views him as “untouchable” in terms of transfers, a hefty bid in the range of 40-50 million Euros could be enough to tempt the Tyneside club. Plus, his young age means there is a very high upside.
