Is Prime Time destined to be back in Big D?
With the Cowboys crumbling under faulty roster construction and an injured quarterback, many wonder whether Mike McCarthy may be on his way out once this season ends.
Jerry Jones realizes that this team needs a jolt. The perfect lightning rod to extract some electricity could come from an old friend. Deion Sanders has been getting more and more buzz as a possible head coaching candidate. He’s currently at Colorado, where he has the Buffaloes squarely in contention to win the Big 12.
BetOnline has Sanders as a +1000 favorite to be the next head coach of the Cowboys. Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin and Minnesota Vikings DC Brian Flores have the same odds. Sitting above this trio include Bill Belichick (+600), Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson (+500), and the current favorite, Mike Vrabel (+300).
The added wrinkle here comes with the quarterback spot. Dak Prescott is out for the rest of the year after tearing his hamstring off the bone. There are questions about whether he can effectively lead this franchise moving forward. Simultaneously, Deion’s son — Shedeur — is considered to be arguably the best signal-caller in this draft.
Could Dallas bring Coach Prime in with the thought of dealing Prescott for assets — and then presumably move up to take the younger Sanders? You’d be hitching your wagon to this family unequivocally. We’ve seen Sanders have success in college. He’d most certainly command the respect of those in the locker room. At the same time, if you’re Dallas, are you ready to go down this road with a relative unknown? The ties between Sanders and the Cowboys adds to the nostalgia angle that Jones clearly appreciates dating back to the Super Bowl runs during the ’90s.
Pushing nostalgia aside, would Vrabel make more sense? He has head coaching experience, is a proven winner, and would bring a much-needed culture of discipline to Dallas. Regardless of what will transpire, this whole thing figures to be one of the more intriguing NFL storylines moving forward.
