Could Aaron Rodgers find a new team in the next few days?

One day after the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired star wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks, the team has been linked to Rodgers. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Steelers are expected to talk with Rodgers and potentially work out a deal for the future Hall of Famer to join the franchise.

In addition to Rodgers, Schefter reports that Pittsburgh is also continuing talks with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Of course, both Wilson and Fields started games for the Steelers last season. Fields led the Steelers to four wins in six starts and accounted for 10 touchdowns. Mike Tomlin ultimately turned to Wilson, and the veteran compiled a 6-5 record to close the regular season.

In 11 regular season starts, Wilson threw for 2,482 yards with 16 TDs and five INTs. Wilson and the Steelers closed the year with five losses in a row, including a 28-14 loss to the rival Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wild Card. The veteran threw for 270 yards and two TDs in defeat.

As for Rodgers, the four-time MVP had a frustrating season with the New York Jets. Coming off a torn Achilles, Rodgers’ mobility clearly declined. While the Jets finished with a poor 5-12 record, Rodgers passed for 3,897 yards and 28 TDs. However, the legend also finished 25th in QBR, 30th in completion percentage, and 28th in yards per attempt among qualified passers.

With Metcalf joining George Pickens in the receiver room, Pittsburgh — in theory — should have a more explosive offense. Wilson and Fields are familiar with the system. Rodgers should be motivated to prove that he can still play at a high level, and a slight bump in performance another year removed from the Achilles tear could be in the cards.
