Matthew Stafford’s future is the No. 1 question surrounding the Los Angeles Rams entering the offseason. While the franchise awaits word from its quarterback regarding his playing career, head coach Sean McVay was open about his feelings during his end-of-season news conference. For McVay, another offseason of uncertainty is not preferred.
“We don’t want to have that go on again,” McVay said. “I don’t think that’s good for anybody. I think sooner than later, being able to get that clarity. Understanding clear, open and honest communication.
“I think there’s a lot of love coming from our part. I think there’s a lot of appreciation coming from his part as well. And I think a lot sooner than later is an ideal scenario.”
Stafford’s future was in limbo last offseason, as well, before he and the Rams agreed on an adjusted contract on the first day of training camp.
The future Hall of Fame quarterback has been in Los Angeles for four seasons. In addition to winning the Super Bowl in Year 1, Stafford has led the Rams to the playoffs in all but one season. Understandably, Stafford’s importance is not lost on his coach.
“I know he’s playing really good football,” McVay said. “Obviously, I love him, love working with him. What he’s meant to our football team has been immeasurable in a positive way.”
The 36-year-old gunslinger ended the year playing some of his best football of the season, all while dealing with four cracked ribs. Wednesday, Stafford’s wife, Kelly, said on her podcast that Stafford cracked four ribs in Week 15 against the San Francisco 49ers. Over his final four games of the season — including two playoff games — Stafford threw for 832 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.
While Stafford remains a key piece for McVay and the Rams, the accomplished coach wants an answer “sooner than later” this offseason as the team plans for the 2025 season.
