Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and reigning NFL Champion Patrick Mahomes has expressed his displeasure about playing 3 games in 11 days. On December 15h, they will travel to Cleveland to play the 3-10 Browns. They then play the Houston Texans on December 21st, and cap off the run with a Christmas day game against the 10-3 Pittsburgh Steelers that Wednesday.
“It’s not a good feeling,” Mahomes said to the press about the schedule. “I’m excited to play on Christmas… but you never want to play this amount of games in such a short amount of time. It’s not great for your body. At the end of the day, it’s your job and your profession and you have to come to work and do it.“
There is a world in which the Chiefs lock up the 1 seed by next weekend, allowing them to rotate players for their Christmas day game. Should the Chiefs win their next two games and the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers lose one of their next two games, it would allow the Chiefs some breathing room.
The Chiefs aren’t the only team with a congested schedule. The Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, and Pittsburgh Steelers — the latter two playing the Chiefs during this run — are also set for an intense workload. The Chiefs can take solace in the fact that overall fatigue may equally affect those two teams as much as them.
Mahomes, who is a league veteran and is well-versed in how to prepare his body for the next game, admitted that it is different this time: “All you can do is focus on the game and the practice you had. I try to prepare my body all year long for this stretch by tailoring my workouts, tailoring how you practice and prepare,” he added.
