Matthew Stafford Signs Extension, Stays with Rams

After weeks of conjecture and ambiguity, it appears as if the pairing of Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams will stay together.

Reporter Ari Meirov took to X Friday morning and announced that Stafford agreed to terms on an extension with the Rams. As such, he’ll be taken off the trade market immediately.

The potential split between Stafford and LA never made much sense. Stafford, 37, is at the end of his career. The thought of starting over in a far less appealing situation would likely be detrimental to the remainder of his football playing days. Staying with Sean McVay on a team primed to win is a no-brainer.

At the same time, Stafford had been wanting to be paid accordingly as a top-10 QB. When the likes of Tua Tagovailoa and Kirk Cousins are making nearly $50 million annually, it’s not shocking to see Stafford pushing for an alteration to his existing deal.

The Rams were reportedly unsure as to whether they wanted to pony up enough cash to appease Stafford. So much, in fact, that he had been given permission to negotiate with other teams with the hopes that LA could then spin him elsewhere for draft capital.

However, as it were, the two realized that the situation would be best served with Stafford as the team’s signal-caller moving forward. McVay likely wouldn’t want to break in a young unproven quarterback given the talent on this team, and the prospects of Aaron Rodgers or someone of that ilk wouldn’t have made much sense, either.
