Giants Agree to Cut Daniel Jones

The Daniel Jones experience with the New York Giants has come to an end. On Friday morning, Giants president John Mara released a statement on Jones:

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and the team.

Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out.

We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Jones signed a four-year/$160 million contract with the Giants in March 2023. The No. 6 overall pick out of Duke in 2019, Jones threw a career-high 24 touchdowns as a rookie. However, he would go on to throw just 21 TDs over the next two seasons while tossing 17 interceptions. In 2022, Jones put together the most efficient season of his career. While helping lead the Giants to a 9-7-1 record, Jones threw for a career-high 3,205 yards with 15 TDs and five INTs.

In his playoff debut, Jones threw for 301 yards and two TDs and rushed for 78 yards in an upset win over the 13-4 Minnesota Vikings. While he wasn’t able to duplicate his performance in the Divisional Round against the Philadelphia Eagles — 15-of-27 for 135 yards, one INT, one lost fumble — the Giants had seen enough to reward Jones with the $160 million deal.

In Year 1 of his new deal, Jones threw two TDs and six INTs in six starts before suffering a season-ending injury to his ACL. After an offseason of discussions surrounding Jones’ future with the franchise, the Giants opted to enter the 2024 season with Jones as their QB1.

Jones started the first 10 games for New York and failed to impress. En route to a 2-8 record, Jones threw for 2,070 yards, eight TDs and seven INTs. Jones failed to lead New York to more than seven points on three occasions and topped 22 points just once.

The former No. 6 pick leaves the Giants with a career record of 24-44-1.
