One of the NFL’s elite cornerbacks is out on the market and ready to join a contender.

Darius Slay, an integral member of the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles, was released from the franchise Monday morning. The Eagles will reportedly save $4.3 million against the salary cap. This saved cash could presumably go toward re-signing linebacker Zach Baum.

Slay starred for the Eagles over the course of the last five years. During this time, he accrued nine interceptions and was elected to three Pro Bowls. While his play on the field has essentially remained the same, Philadelphia is opting to move forward with younger options in Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell.

Slay, 34, has reportedly indicated he will play one more year before retiring. With the Eagles no longer being an option, it will not be surprising to see Slay end up in Detroit. Slay spent the first seven years of his career in the Motor City. Also making three Pro Bowl appearances for the Lions, his most notable year came in 2017 where he notched a career-best eight interceptions in one season.

There will surely be teams around the league hoping to convince Slay to suit up for their respective teams. He’s a big, long corner with tons of experience. Slay could be the type of veteran presence needed to put a younger team over the top as a true Super Bowl contender. At the very least, he’s a guy who can tutor younger players in a positive way. It’s not overly often that a future Hall of Famer can join your team and actually contribute at the very end of said career.
