NFL free agency is ongoing, with a few marquee names still mulling offers. The crop of veteran wide receivers still available should be decreasing shortly. These pass catchers could help sure up the receiving corps of teams in need of playmakers. Let’s look at five wide receivers still on the market, and give a predictions for where they may end up landing:
Tyler Lockett — Raiders
For the first time in his 10-year NFL career, Tyler Lockett will be wearing a different uniform. The longtime Seahawk was released this season as Seattle looks to get younger at wideout. The 32-year-old is coming off his worst year since becoming a full-time starter — 49 receptions, 600 yards, 2 TDs — but is still a capable deep threat. A reunion with QB Geno Smith and his former head coach Pete Carroll seems like an obvious move. The Raiders need receiver help, and Lockett’s skillset would help open up underneath routes for TE Brock Bowers and WR Jakobi Meyers.
Amari Cooper — Jets
Amari Cooper’s short stint in Buffalo did not go as planned. The Bills traded for the five-time Pro Bowler midseason last year. They hoped they were getting a true No. 1 receiver, but Cooper was hardly a factor. In the postseason, Cooper managed just six receptions for 41 yards in three appearances. It’s likely the Bills look elsewhere for receiver help this offseason, leaving Cooper to join his fifth time of his career. With Davante Adams bolting for LA, the Jets desperately need somebody opposite Garrett Wilson. Even though Cooper is coming off a down season, defenses will likely still respect his ability to get open and make plays. That could at least alleviate some pressure off of Wilson.
Keenan Allen — Chiefs
Keenan Allen previously revealed there are only three teams he’d play for if his career continues — the Bears, Chargers, and Rams. Well, the Bears added Olamide Zaccheaus to be the No. 3 wideout behind D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze. The Chargers already have eight WRs on the roster after bringing back Mike Williams. It doesn’t seem like the Rams will be adding any more wideouts after extending Tutu Atwell and signing Davante Adams to a massive deal.
It’s possible Allen follows through with his claim and retires. Or, he could fill a major role for the defending AFC Champions. The Chiefs love sure-handed pass catchers who operate in the short-to-intermediate range. Allen would be a massive upgrade in that area over JuJu Smith-Schuster. The potential of playing next to Patrick Mahomes could be enough for Allen to ease up on his team restrictions.
Stefon Diggs — Cowboys
Diggs’ first year with the Texans was cut short after suffering an ACL tear in Week 8. Houston is likely moving on from the veteran wideout after trading for Christian Kirk this offseason. Diggs was on pace for his seventh-straight 1,000-yard campaign before suffering the injury. An elite route runner who can get open against any type of coverage, Diggs is the type of player that fits in every offense. The Cowboys have desperately needed a proven No. 2 option next to CeeDee Lamb. While Diggs’ status for Week 1 is still up in the air, this is a chance for Dallas to get a potential star at a discount.
Cooper Kupp — Patriots
The Rams chose Davante Adams over longtime franchise stalwart Cooper Kupp. While their per-game stats are drastically different, Adams is the far more reliable option at this point in their careers. Over the last three years, Adams missed three games and Kupp missed 18. Kupp hasn’t played a full season since his dominant 2021 campaign when he led the league in every major receiving category and won Offensive Player of the Year. Even with the injury woes, Kupp will be in demand. The Patriots have a ton of cap space and have desperately been searching for a wideout. Kupp would instantly be the best pass catcher on the team and serve as a safety blanket for sophomore QB Drake Maye.
