Top QBs in the Transfer Portal: Salter, Moss, More

With the transfer portal opening on Monday officially, there’s been no shortage of players making themselves available for a move elsewhere.

Reports indicate that roughly 600 D1 athletes have already entered the portal — with a bunch more expected to join them in the upcoming days.

The QB position specifically has no shortage of talent available for those programs in search of an upgrade. Let’s take a look at some of the options currently in the portal.

Kaidon Salter (Liberty)

The four-year player out of Liberty is one of the most high-profile signal-callers in the portal. While with the Flames, Salter put up video game-like numbers — totaling 56 passing TDs and 21 rushing TDs (77 total TDs). For good measure, he’s rushed for 2,006 yards (5.7 YPC) and thrown for 5,889 yards.

Being a true dual-threat player with a considerable amount of experience, Salter will have no shortage of suitors. According to one report from On3 Sports, the likes of Syracuse, Colorado, Florida State, Auburn, and UCLA are all involved to varying degrees.

Conner Weigman (Texas A&M)

Despite being a top recruit out of high school, Weigman’s career in College Station was uneven.

Playing for multiple coaches didn’t help, and he suffered from the general volatility and inconsistency one would expect from a young player. That’s not to say he’s without talent. We’ve seen glimpses of Weigman’s ability on display. He’s operating with a ton of natural ability — though we’re not exactly sure which program would best be positioned to extract it out of him.

Early rumors have Houston and Syracuse being possibilities. Weigman went 9-4 as a starter for the Aggies throughout his career. He wil have two years left eligibility-wise.

Miller Moss (USC)

Lincoln Riley was looking for a scapegoat. USC underachieved yet again this year due to a team lacking in depth along the lines of scrimmage. For whatever reason, Moss was benched more than midway through the season.

In his first full year as a starter, Moss was completing passes at a respectable 64.4 percent clip. He threw 18 TDs to only 9 INTs on the year. He won’t wow you with arm strength or athleticism. Having said that, he’s an accurate thrower of the football, and Moss has more toughness and moxie than you’d think. Early signs point to Missouri and Louisville in on him.

Darian Mensah (Tulane)

Mensah isn’t a household name…yet.

The native of California came to New Orleans and took the program by storm. A 2-star prospect out of high school with his only offer coming from Idaho State, he racked up 22 TDs to only 6 INTs as a redshirt freshman this year.

Mensah is a plus-athlete with a strong arm. He completed passes at nearly 66 percent this past year, and he has all the tools to be a big-time signal-caller at his next stop. You can bet programs from all over the country would be pining for Mensah’s services. UCLA would appear to be a great fit on the surface with new OC Tino Sunseri.

Thomas Castellanos (Boston College)

Castellanos had a truncated 2024 year with Boston College en route to him transferring out of the program.

As a sophomore, Castellanos was brilliant — rushing for 1,113 yards and 13 TDs while also throwing for 2,248 yards and 15 TDs. This past year, he threw 18 TDs to only 5 INTs, though Castellanos managed only 194 yards on the ground in eight contests.

There are some limitations to his game. He stands generously listed at 5’9″. Having said that, Castellanos is an explosive improvisational athlete with the skills to make big plays. He’ll visit Florida State to potentially link up with new OC Gus Malzahn.

Isaac Wilson (Utah)

Isaac Wilson is another player with a big upside. The brother of NFL player Zach Wilson, Isaac was a 4-star prospect out of high school. He signed with a local school in Utah over the likes of Oregon and Miami.

As a freshman, he was relatively decent despite a volatile offensive scheme/shoddy offensive line play. Wilson threw for 1,510 yards and 10 TDs (11 INTs). In a more stable environment, one could see him break out as a potential star. One would figure BYU as a major factor here.
