According to various reports, Fresno State may have finally found its successor to long-time coach Jeff Tedford.
Matt Entz has allegedly been pegged as the next head coach for the Bulldogs. The news broke via multiple pundits on Wednesday morning — which also happens to coincide with the first National Signing Day period.
Entz had most recently been an assistant coach with USC. He commanded the linebacker’s room, though also was listed as the associate head coach and general leader of the Trojans’ defensive unit.
Prior to that, Entz was arguably the best small-school head coach in the country. He led a very good North Dakota State squad for years. Entz won two FCS National Championships with NDSU after serving as the program’s defensive coordinator under current K-State head coach Chris Klieman.
Taking what many called a risk, he left his cushy head coach job in Fargo for an assistant coach position at a much higher level/higher profile institution.
This is a very smart move by Fresno State. We’ve seen a host of head coaches from smaller schools come up and lead P5 programs very well. Most recently, Curt Cignetti has completely transformed Indiana into a College Football Playoff contender after dominating at James Madison.
Entz is known for player development. Fresno State is a very respectable program, and there’s a real sense of pride stemming from the players and the fan base. FSU has produced some good NFL talent historically speaking. Residing in the talent-rich state of California, Entz should be able to hit the ground running as he works to replenish the talent that’s already hit the portal.
