WWE is aiming to make the sport of professional wrestling a primetime event once more.
For seven years during the late 80s/early 90s, you could see WWE (then WWF) programming on Saturday nights via NBC. This was a genius plan by the powers that be then, as it showcased the brand to an entirely new audience.
Paul Levesque, the wrestler more commonly known as Triple H, is now essentially running the product. With WWE as a brand red-hot right now, it only made sense for him to revive the dormant partnership between the company and the media outlet.
On Dec. 14, we will see the newest installment of Saturday Night’s Main Event at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. Knowing the show will be promoted essentially akin to a PLE (Premium Live Event), Triple H needed to have an elite pairing of performers scheduled to square off.
Enter WWE Champ Cody Rhodes and the embattled Kevin Owens. These two have reportedly been selected to face off against one another for Rhodes’ title.
Rhodes has been the face of the company since leaping over from AEW. He’s very over with the fans and is a perfect choice to market to the casual viewer. He’s good-looking, not overly big or unusual from a size standpoint, and he has ring attire displaying patriotic colors of red, white, and blue.
Plus, he has the reality of being the son of the late great Dusty Rhodes. Possessing this link could further cement Rhodes with fans who watched wrestling decades ago, and may be curious to see what it looks like today.
Owens is a terrific worker and is one of the best in the company on the mic. From a storyline standpoint, these two were once friendly with one another. However, all of that has dissipated quickly over the last few months. It’s evolved into a hatred that is captivating and fascinating all the same.
We’re not yet privy as to the rest of the card for this event. However, if it is indeed headlined by these two (which in all likelihood it will be), the audience should be in for a real treat.
