Jey Uso Feared WWE Would Fire Him Every Year

The 2025 Royal Rumble Men’s champion Jey Uso says he treats every day in WWE as if it’s his last.

Last Saturday’s Royal Rumble event saw Jey Uso win the competition against the odds. Many had predicted the returning John Cena would secure his third career Royal Rumble victory in his career, so when Cena was thrown over the top rope by Jey Uso in the final elimination, it sent shockwaves through the wrestling world.

The fact this year’s edition features the most star-studded lineup in some time such as Roman Reigns, CM Punk, and Cena makes the result all the more shocking.

It was a long time coming for Uso, who reflected on his 15-year-long career in a recent podcast interview with Club 520 while also admitting a ‘cold’ revelation that he feared for his career every year:

“I ain’t gonna lie, every year I’ve been wrestling, I thought I’d get fired. That’s how I think. That’s how cold it is. Everybody is coming. In this business, everybody is trying to come get the top spot.

They are bringing in the little homies, and I’m on the way out. I have been on WWE TV for 15 years. I always felt strong, but I feel my body creeping up. I’m 39 right now. It’s a young man’s game and I recognize it. I just like stepping up and challenging them all.”

Uso, who stated that he intends on challenging Gunther for the World Heavyweight belt after his Rumble victory, continued to say that he treats every night like his first time:

“I’m so grateful. There was a moment in wrestling where there was no reaction or I wasn’t on TV and I’d show up to work and sit in the corner. Every single night, I treat it like it’s my first time. The energy out there is crazy, and I really vibe off that.”

Few can argue that Uso continues to be one of the biggest figures in the WWE today, being a top merchandise seller alongside his electric “Yeet” entrances that leave the entire crowd at his bidding.

For Cena, the year-long return tour has been dealt a blow in his bid to return to WrestleMania, but there is still plenty of time left for him to get there. For him to win a Royal Rumble so soon after returning would have felt like a hollow victory.

Uso also said during the interview that his son has now taken up an interest in wrestling, saying “He tells me, ‘Dad, how old do I have to be to wrestle?’ 18. Five more years me and you are gonna be like Dom and Rey Mysterio!”
