The Boston Red Sox have one of the deepest and most talented farm systems in the sport.

While a few of those prospects will continue to sharpen their skills in the Minors, one of them is ready for the Big Show.

It was announced on Monday that prized prospect Kristian Campbell made the Opening Day roster for the Red Sox. Not only that, but Campbell is slated to be the team’s starting 2nd baseman.

The former Georgia Tech star was a fourth-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. He zoomed through the system — operating at both middle infield spots and even at times in the outfield. MLB.com most recently had Campbell as the No. 7 prospect overall before this recent promotion.

Campbell has the ceiling of a 30-30 guy. Since being drafted, he’s tinkered with his swing to lift the ball with more power as opposed to hitting the ball on the ground. A good athlete, there’s also a track record of Campbell being a threat to steal bases.

This is a fascinating move for Boston as it positions itself to be a real threat to win the AL East. In the wake of signing Alex Bregman, there were questions as to where he’d slot in defensively. Rafael Devers has been somewhat vocal in wanting to play 3B which would theoretically place Bregman at 2B.

However according to Ken Rosenthal, Devers will begin the season at DH. Bregman will man the 3B spot with Campbell at 2B. This gives Boston its best possible defensive alignment. It also makes the team more athletic in the field with Campbell possessing some real range.

At this point, don’t be shocked to see Campbell listed as a possible favorite for AL Rookie of the Year.
