The Kansas City Royals have been waiting for their bats to wake up this season, and that wish was finally granted during their sweep of the Colorado Rockies this week.

Captain Salvador Perez delivered a masterclass at Kauffman, leading his team to a doubleheader sweep on Thursday that was equal parts record-breaking and memorable. He went 5-for-8 across the two games — hitting four doubles, driving in four runs, scoring four times, and drawing a walk. This offensive explosion propelled the Royals to 7-4 and 6-2 wins, securing their first sweep of the 2025 season and snapping a six-game losing streak. The veteran catcher, who has struggled to start the season with a .185/.285/.293 slash line, rediscovered his old form.

Per Sport Radar, “Salvy” now boasts a career OPS of 1.159 in doubleheaders (minimum 150 plate appearances), which ties him with Luis Gonzalez and Babe Ruth for the best in AL/NL history, with only thousandths separating the trio. They also edge out Mark McGwire (1.148) and Ted Williams (1.143) — placing the Venezuelan in elite company.

Perez also went on to provide a moment of comedy during Game 2. When sliding into second base on his third double, he snapped his belt and forced a brief pause as he swapped it out. Teammate Bobby Witt Jr. couldn’t wait to get his jab in, saying, “That’s what happens when you’re that fast. The friction of the dirty and everything just kinda breaks it.” The Royals dugout burst out in laughter, and they hung up the belt in the dugout as a good-luck charm.

His performance also inspired offensive displays from Witt, Drew Waters, and Vinnie Pasquantino, helping the Royals climb to a 12-14 record. For a team that was desperately searching for offensive consistency, the sweep of the Rockies could be exactly what they needed.

The Royals will now kick off a three-game home series against the Houston Astros.
