Aaron Boone will be back for his eighth season as manager after the New York Yankees confirmed that they have exercised their 2025 club option on Boone’s contract. For the most part, the decision seemed inevitable — taking the Yankees to the World Series was a major achievement in itself despite falling short against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the seven-game series.
With the Yankees, Boone has a record of 603-429 and has led the team to six postseason berths out of seven total seasons, winning three AL East titles and one pennant. However, Yankee fans are waiting for one prize in particular: the World Series, which has eluded them since 2009. Boone had the following to say:
“I am grateful for the trust placed in me to lead this team. It’s a responsibility — and an opportunity — that I will never take lightly.
It’s a great privilege to show up for work every day and be surrounded by so many determined and talented players, coaches and staff members. Starting with Steinbrenner family, there is a collective commitment to excellence within this organization that is embedded in all that we do. I’m already looking forward to reporting for spring training in Tampa and working tirelessly to return the Yankees to the postseason to compete for a World Championship.”
Yankees GM Brian Cashman values Boone as a steady presence in the dugout who can connect with the players and gracefully be the face of the club, saying he has done “a great job,” and said that making tough decisions makes him a good manager even if it ends up not working:
“The manager’s job is so impossible, so you can play the game of second-guessing because you’re either going to make a move and it’ll be right, you make a move and it’ll be wrong and then have at it, right? So I think he’s a really, really good manager. I think that we’re lucky to have him. He’s done a great job.”
Boone’s return doesn’t mean it will come without challenges. The Yankees loss in the World Series highlighted some notable gaps in the team, especially with making unforced errors and showing “fundamental” weaknesses the team must iron out. Additionally, the club is also facing a battle to retain slugger Juan Soto, who has become one of the top free agents this season and Yankee fans are desperate to keep in the pinstripes.
