Dodgers Acquire Esteury Ruiz from A’s, Add Elite Speed to Organization

Whenever the Dodgers make some sort of move, the rest of the league takes notice.

This is even the case when it’s a minor transaction. On Wednesday, the Dodgers acquired outfielder Esteury Ruiz from the Athletics in exchange for minor league pitcher Carlos Duran. Ruiz had recently been designated for assignment by the A’s — and the Dodgers clearly saw something they liked.

Ruiz will immediately play for the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate. On the surface, this doesn’t look like a move with much significance. Ruiz has struggled immensely to hit the baseball throughout his professional career. In parts of three seasons with the A’s, Brewers, and Padres, Ruiz has a career .243 batting average with an OBP of .297 and an OPS of .641.

This doesn’t exactly scream “Big Leaguer” by any stretch. Having said that, Ruiz does have one elite skill: speed.

The 26-year-old Dominican outfielder stole 67 bases in 2023 for the A’s. This led the entire American League during that season. He had 5 HRs and 47 RBIs during that year (with a .254 batting average). It was the only full season Ruiz has had in the Majors.

Tommy Edman has entrenched himself as LA’s starting second baseman. If he continues to field the way he has thus far, you’re looking at a guy who could become a Gold Glove winner. The centerfield spot thus far has been manned by Andy Pages — who is more so a corner outfielder.

As has been the case with the Dodgers when acquiring players considered to be relative afterthoughts, Ruiz gives them another option as an elite base stealer. It wouldn’t in the least bit be shocking if Ruiz spent much of the year refining his swing with the Dodgers’ elite developmental staff. From there, seeing him on a possible postseason roster strictly as a guy who can swipe a bag would almost be expected at this point, considering how quick and prolific he is.

At the very least, LA nabbed another guy who could be a difference-maker in some capacity down the road.
