Blake Snell is a San Francisco Giant.
On Monday, ESPN’s Jeff Passan revealed that Snell reached a deal with the Giants to stay in the National League West. The reigning National League Cy Young winner, Snell’s deal is a two-year/$62 million pact with an opt-out clause following the 2024 season. With the move, Snell reunites with manager Bob Melvin — Melvin is entering his first year with the Giants after spending the past two seasons in San Diego.
Snell’s agreement, similar to those of Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman — both represented by Scott Boras — prioritizes a higher annual value at the expense of a shorter contract duration. However, it allows him to explore free agency once again, potentially capitalizing on a more favorable market in the upcoming offseason.
Snell’s arrival marks the end of an active offseason for the Giants. While trying to catch the rival Dodgers and keep pace with the likes of Arizona and San Diego, San Francisco overhauled its roster by adding a handful of impact players.
Their offseason acquisitions include Korean sensation Jung Hoo Lee (six years/$113 million), who brings speed and leadoff skills as the new center fielder, slugger Jorge Soler (three years/$42 million), former All-Star Matt Chapman (three years/$54 million), and former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray.
Snell stands among an elite group of pitchers who have won the Cy Young Award in both the American League and National League. Last year with the Padres, he posted a 14-9 record with an MLB-leading 2.25 ERA — Snell secured 28 out of 30 first-place votes. His first Cy Young was won in 2018 as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.
