On Sunday, a week after the starters were announced, Major League Baseball revealed the pitchers and reserves for the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.
The Midsummer Classic is set to feature a ton of first-time All-Stars and young players. 19 players are under 27 years old — highlighted by the likes of Paul Skenes, Bobby Witt Jr. and Gunnar Henderson — and 32 men will be appearing in their first All-Star Game.
The No. 1 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, Pittsburgh’s Skenes is in contention to start on the mound for the National League. Through his first 10 starts, the rookie holds a 5-0 record with a 2.12 ERA.
“This is cool, and I’m just grateful for all you guys,” Skenes said to teammates in the clubhouse after being told by manager Derek Shelton. “Since the first day I’ve been here I’ve been part of the team. I couldn’t have done it without you guys.”
The Philadelphia Phillies will send a league-high seven players to Texas for the game — Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Alec Bohm, who will start for the NL, and pitchers Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suarez, Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman.
The Los Angeles Dodgers will be represented by six players, and both the Cleveland Guardians and San Diego Padres will send five players to the ASG. 15 of the 30 teams will send just one player to Texas, and the host Rangers will have two players taking the field — second baseman Marcus Semien and pitcher Kirby Yates.
