Happy Gilmore 2 won’t be the only golf comedy coming to the world of streaming this year.

Released as a bit of a teaser trailer Thursday morning, the upcoming Apple TV+ show Stick will feature Owen Wilson.

The iteration of Wilson shown in the teaser was very reminiscent of the quick and witty John he portrayed in Wedding Crashers over 20 years ago. In the scene, he’s pumping a golfing novice up in the clubhouse — presumably with the hopes of selling him gear and/or getting him to commit to something financially.

The Apple TV+ press package includes the following on the project:

Stick is a new golf comedy series created by Jason Keller and starring and executive produced by Owen Wilson. Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After the collapse of his marriage and getting fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store, Pryce hedges his bets, and future, entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom named Santi (Peter Dager). Stick is a heartfelt, feel-good comedy about a found family and their relationships set within the world of golf as it has never been shown before.

Interestingly enough, there are some early parallels to the 90s film Kingpin in which an ex-professional bowler with a notorious personal life (Woody Harrelson) works with a member of the Amish community (Randy Quaid) to try and become a bowling champ. It was a comedy chock-full of hijinks and gags.

In this case, it would be great to see Wilson ‘cook’ as a leading man — something he’s excelled in throughout his career.
