Is Bo Nix Making A Push For OROY?

Bo Nix got off to a rough start to his rookie campaign. The Broncos’ first-year QB threw four interceptions in his first two games as Denver fell to Seattle and Pittsburgh. It wasn’t until Week 4 when Nix threw his first career touchdown pass against the Jets — a game in which he finished with 60 passing yards.

However, it’s been an entirely different story in recent weeks. Nix has 9 passing TDs to just 1 INT over the last four games. In Week 11, Nix led a dominant 38-6 win over the first-place Atlanta Falcons — throwing for 307 yards and 4 TDs. Now, Nix has suddenly thrown his cap into the Offensive Rookie of the Year race as the Broncos are chasing a playoff spot.

Jayden Daniels seemed like a lock for the award not too long ago. Daniels’ efficient play had Washington in first place in the NFC East. His play has slipped as of late. After completing over 80 percent of his passes in his first four games, Daniels barely has a 60 percent completion rate over the last seven weeks. His running numbers have dipped, as well. An injury sustained in a Week 7 game versus the Panthers has limited his scrambling ability. Daniels still leads all rookie QBs in rushing, but has just 23 yards on the ground over the last two weeks.

Daniels’ downturn has opened the door for other candidates, with Nix on the trail. Nix ranks first among all rookies in passing yards (2,275) and touchdowns (14). While not as prolific of a runner as Daniels, Nix is capable on the ground. He’s rushed for 295 yards (7th among QBs) and 4 TDs.

Most of all, Nix’s improved play has led to the Broncos winning games. Denver is 6-3 after the 0-2 start. They’re a blocked field goal away from being 7-2 in that stretch (with a win over the defending champions). They currently hold a Wild Card spot in the AFC. Their upcoming schedule leading up to the Week 14 Bye — at LVR, vs. CLE — is favorable. We could be talking about the Broncos being 8-5 heading into the last month of the season. Not much was expected from this Broncos offense, but Nix and head coach Sean Payton are making it work.

We’re still a ways away from deciding all of the award races. But Nix’s recent flurry has made the Rookie of the Year race far more intriguing than it was a few weeks ago. If he can keep it up, don’t be surprised if the former Oregon Duck becomes the first Bronco to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award since Clinton Portis in 2002.
