New York Jets Fire GM Joe Douglas in What’s Become a Distaster of a Season

The Jets are an unmitigated disaster at this point.

Expectations coming into the season were sky-high. A healthy Aaron Rodgers was supposed to lead this talented team to the playoffs. You had elite skill all over the field — from Quinnen Williams and Haason Reddick up front to Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner at receiver and corner, respectively.

For a plethora of reasons, things have plummeted in a hurry. The latest news involves GM Joe Douglas. He was unceremoniously let go Tuesday morning in correspondence with the Jets currently sitting at 3-8.

Douglas was fired by owner Woody Johnson. Taking over for Douglas in an interim role will be senior advisor Phil Savage.

You’re only as good as your record indicates, and this was a major problem for Douglas. He was hired in 2019 to revive a once-proud franchise that had fallen on hard times. During this period, the Jets have lost 64 of the last 94 games under Douglas’ leadership.

Trading for Rodgers seemed like a panic move at the time. Based on how things have transpired, it looks even worse now. Taking Zach Wilson No. 2 overall in 2021 over the likes of Ja’Marr Chase, Patrick Surtain II, Micah Parsons, and Penei Sewell proved to be a grave mistake.

With another lost season, coupled with Rodgers aging well into his 40s, the Jets are seemingly faced with the prospect of rebuilding yet again considering the team needs to hire a new general manager and head coach in the offseason.
