“I have battled injuries my whole career, but this is one that I cannot come back from,” Grayson McCall posted to Instagram. “Brain specialists, my family, and I have come to the conclusion that it is in my best interest to hang the cleats up.”
A high-profile transfer ahead of the season, McCall is retiring from football after suffering a head injury in early October. The injury occurred during NC State’s 34-30 loss to Wake Forest on October 5. McCall was injured on a running play and carted off the field.
Before joining NC State, McCall had a successful stint at Coastal Carolina. In 42 games with the Chanticleers over five years, McCall threw for 10,005 yards and 88 touchdowns. The talented passer led Coastal to an 11-1 record in 2020, an 11-2 record in ’21, and nine wins in ’22.
“As I feel like my whole world is being taken from me, I feel some sense of contentment,” McCall said. “Every time my feet hit the grass, I left every single ounce of myself on that field. I always played my hardest and to the best of my ability because I never knew what play would be my last. I have no regrets throughout my career and that is something I can be proud of.”
“I look forward to taking my passion and love for the game into the coaching space to serve and lead the next group of kids with a dream,” he said.
